CS619 FINAL PROJECT FINAL VIVA PREPARATION

3-tier Architecture Three-tier architecture is a client–server software architecture pattern in which the user interface (presentation), functional process logic ("business rules"), computer data storage and data access are developed and maintained as independent modules, most often on separate platforms.
An entity relationship diagram (ERD) shows the relationships of entity sets stored in a database. An entity in this context is a component of data. In other words, ER diagrams illustrate the logical structure of databases.
An attribute is a quality or characteristic given to a person, group, or some other thing.
A super key is a set of attributes within a table whose values can be used to uniquely identify a tuple. A candidate key is a minimal set of attributes necessary to identify a tuple; this is also called a minimal super key.
A candidate key is a combination of attributes that can be uniquely used to identify a database record without referring to any other data. Each table may have one or more candidate. One of these candidate keys is selected as the table primary key
A primary key, also called a primary keyword, is a key in a relational database that is unique for each record. It is a unique identifier, such as a driver license number, telephone number (including area code), or vehicle identification number (VIN). A relational database must always have one and only one primary key.
An alternate key is a key associated with one or more columns whose values uniquely identify every row in the table, but which is not the primary key. For example, where the primary key for a table may be the employee id, the alternate key might combine the first, middle, and last names of the employee.
In the context of relational databases, a foreign key is a field (or collection of fields) in one table that uniquely identifies a row of another table or the same table. In simpler words, the foreign keyis defined in a second table, but it refers to the primary key or a unique key in the first table.
Database relationships are very similar in that they're associations between tables. There are three types of relationships: One-to-one: Both tables can have only one record on either side of the relationship. Each primary key value relates to only one (or no) record in the related table
DDL
Data Definition Language (DDL) statements are used to define the database structure or schema. Some examples:
  • CREATE - to create objects in the database
  • ALTER - alters the structure of the database
  • DROP - delete objects from the database
  • TRUNCATE - remove all records from a table, including all spaces allocated for the records are removed
  • COMMENT - add comments to the data dictionary
  • RENAME - rename an object
DML
Data Manipulation Language (DML) statements are used for managing data within schema objects. Some examples:
  • SELECT - retrieve data from a database
  • INSERT - insert data into a table
  • UPDATE - updates existing data within a table
  • DELETE - deletes all records from a table, the space for the records remain
  • MERGE - UPSERT operation (insert or update)
  • CALL - call a PL/SQL or Java subprogram
  • EXPLAIN PLAN - explain access path to data
  • LOCK TABLE - control concurrency
DCL
Data Control Language (DCL) statements. Some examples:
  • GRANT - gives user's access privileges to database
  • REVOKE - withdraw access privileges given with the GRANT command
TCL
  • Transaction Control (TCL) statements are used to manage the changes made by DML statements. It allows statements to be grouped together into logical transactions.
  • COMMIT - save work done
  • SAVEPOINT - identify a point in a transaction to which you can later roll back
  • ROLLBACK - restore database to original since the last COMMIT
  • SET TRANSACTION - Change transaction options like isolation level and what rollback segment to use
Database normalization, or simply normalization, is the process of organizing the columns (attributes) and tables (relations) of a relational database to reduce data redundancy and improve data integrity.
A SQL join clause combines columns from one or more tables in a relational database. It creates a set that can be saved as a table or used as it is. A JOIN is a means for combining columns from one (self-table) or more tables by using values common to each.
